Can you tell what a dog is thinking by reading his ears? Learn to read your dog’s ears. This is especially important if your dog is sick or injured.
These days I’m pretty relaxed. I’m feeling better, the sun is shining, and the children in the neighborhood still want to come and visit me.

They like to come and say “Hi, Joey” and they like to come give me a pet.
Because I’m still injured and Jane doesn’t want me to get too excited, I will sit down and then Jane will allow the children to come over to pet me, one at a time.
It’s important for the children to understand when I’m relaxed and when I’m nervous. How can children know how a dog wants to play? I can’t tell them with words, but there is one easy way for them to know how I am feeling: They can look at my ears! They can read my ears.
My ears are very important for a lot of reasons.
Of course, I use them to listen.
I also use them when I am trying to smell something! Since my ears are large and floppy, I can use them when I’m trying to smell the scents of dogs, and food, to cup the odors.
My ears are also an indicator of my mood. You can tell when I am relaxed, when I am excited, or when I am nervous or afraid. When children want to pet me, they need to make sure that I am relaxed, and not nervous or afraid.
Here are so photos of my ears. Can you read them?

Hi Joey!! I hope you are feeling better. Your blue cast is a fabulous color on you.
I like this lesson about your ears – I have a Beagle named Mason and she uses her ears the same exact way! Her ears are so long that she sometimes bites them when she is eating her dinner!
Keep your spirits up, Joey! We are always thinking of you.
Rachel,
Hi! Thanks for reading this post and for telling me about Mason. That’s very interesting. Beagles must then have a very good sense of smell. Even better than breeds such as mine (Labrador Retriever). I’ll be she doesn’t miss any food that is dropped on the kitchen floor! Lucky her!
Please say hello to Mason for me. And I hope that she has a bon apetite!
Love, Joey
Beagles’ sense of smell – with the help of their long ears – is so keen that, according to this article, if they are off-leash they can become so busy following a scent that they will get lost or can wander out into the street and into danger. This article is very interesting to read about beagles and this also tells why it is important to keep them on a leash when they are outside. Now I’m a dog and I hate being on a lead, but take it from me, safety first!
Hi Joey!
Mason DEFINITELY has a very strong sense of smell. In fact, we ALWAYS have to have her on leash because otherwise we may never see her again! She even digs out of enclosed pens! In a way it makes me sad because its almost like she cant ever enjoy just being a dog. But I have to always remember that even though she cannot roam free like other dogs, keeping her on leash keeps her safe and out of trouble. A beagle’s nose can definitely lead them to places they should not be!
I hope you are feeling better!
I am feeling much better, thank you. My dad saw me scratching at the ground yesterday and he thinks that’s a sign that I’m getting back to my “old” self. One more month and I get my leg x-rayed again. I still have lot of restrictions, though, and probably will for a while.
You can bring Mason over here some time: We have a fence around our yard and we could play. Or Mason could just run around. But then again, the fence didn’t keep me in, did it?!!! (And I hear beagles are diggers, too!)
Say “Hi” to Mason!
hi,Joey i love the pic of the dog.i have 2 dogs.one is a beagle name ”squeaky”,and my other one is a beagle mix name”maddie.” i use to have 28 dogs, but some were stolen, ranaway, and some we gave away.oh and some were eaten by other animals.i have a bunch of animals,i have between 20 or 30.lol.well bye.
Emily,
Nice to hear from you! I think there is some connection between this little box that my mom carries, and she then she makes me sit and stay, and then I hear “click” and then I hear “Okay, Joey. good boy” and these photos you see of me?
I don’t know many beagles but one of my readers has a beagle and she says his ears are so large that they have to tie them up when he eats! Is this true for Squeaky and Maddie? Did you have 28 dogs all at once? I am the only dog here but I used to have Mickey, my brother cat. Now I’m alone. My parents know that I would be happy with a playmate but after all the trouble taking care of me with after my car accident, I don’t think they want another dog. But my sister Rosie is coming over in 3 days and we’ll get together.
I feel badly for the doggies that met terrible fates. Near our old house was a large wooded area with coyotes and we know a family who lived by its side and who had cats. One cat went out one day and never came home. The owner has to make a choice about his remaining cats – to keep the cats inside all the time, or to let them be free, as cats like to be, and take his chances. It’s a difficult choice. I know how hard it is to be stuck inside all day; I also know that there are dangers lurking for us dogs and cats outside.
Hopefully those who ran away or who were given away are happy and in loving families! And staying very close to home!
Joey
Nice site. TNx
Joey’s really in good shape. It’s hard to believe he’s ten years old, even with his injuries.
